1. Effective flood control through integrated and collaborative dam operation at the three Nabari river upstream dams

Integrated and collaborative flood control operation at upstream dams prevented inundation in the urban area of Nabari city during the Typhoon No. 18, 2009. Inundation was anticipated to be inevitable under the regular flood control operation. The use of improved rainfall forecast technology and runoff analysis model enabled the effective application of flexible operation protocols in the face of uncertain flows. It resulted in a 1.5 m decrease in river level, and prevented inundation of 1,180 properties.
The effort is noteworthy in that it established a new approach to dam flood operation, through which inundation and flood damage were reduced. This is significant given that extreme rainfall events may occur more frequently due to global climate change.


2. Design and Construction of Large-Scale Underpinning Hanshin Expressway Kobe-Yamate Route Cut and Cover Tunnel Construction in the Kobe Rapid Transit Railway crossing section

This is the Japan’s largest underpinning for constructing a new underground expressway, directly under the existing subway structure in service.  The displacement controlling value of the subway structure was so small that the conventional technology cannot handle the situation.  However, the technology development of the "Automatic control system for underpinning" and the "Underpinning construction equipment" overcome the difficulties and enabled the expressway structure to be safely completed  The introduction of these newly developed technologies resulted in a drastic improvement in safety of under pinning work, and they are expected to be applied to similar future projects.


3. Construction techniques for deepwater Immersed tunnel under strong current. - Construction of the Railway Tunnel Under the Bosporus Straits in Istanbul, Turkey -
A railway construction project is now underway in Istanbul, Turkey to connect Asia and Europe by tunnels and stations. The tunnel beneath the Bosporus straits was built using immersed tube techniques under severe environmental conditions such as a strong current and the deepest water depth of 60 meters. To overcome these conditions, innovative construction techniques of the tidal current prediction system by using ICT, Access shaft system that is installed after the first immersion, etc. had been developed and applied. The successful completion of the tunnel has demonstrated that the range of application of immersed tube tunnels can be extended. This contributes to the development of construction technology for underwater tunnels and also to the worldwide recognition of high level of Japanese technology.


4. Construction engineering and management of line-switching.-For accomplishment a total of 8 track-switching at the biggest terminal, the Shinjuku station-

The Shinjuku Station is one of the biggest terminals in the world with 7 platforms and 1.5 million passengers a day. For the purpose of mitigating traffic congestions and facilitating traffic transit, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) made a plan to replace and broaden the Shinjuku Overbridge and to construct a 1.5ha artificial ground for a multimodal traffic plaza, and delegated the construction over the railway tracks to East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Under the condition of limited space and time constraint, JR East carried out a total of 8 track-switching to create a space to build the piers of the overbridge and the artificial ground, mobilizing two thousand workers and heavy cranes on rail without suspending the operation of the station.



1. Nishi-Osaka Extension Line(Hanshin Namba Line) Construction Project- Creating A New Urban Railway Network in Kinki Region -

Nishi-Osaka Extension Line Construction Project is aimed to connect Nishi-Kujo St. to Osaka-Namba St., for creating a new urban railway network in Kinki Region.
This project enables passengers to go Kobe from Nara without changing a train, and it means municipal performance in the east-west direction is strongly strengthened centering on Osaka.
On construction, current technology is adopted, such as constructing the bridge on a salvage barge throughout from framing step into building step, or applying rectangle shield tunneling method. And also heightened soundproof wall or open ceiling space in the underground station is applied from the aspect of environment or landscape.
As this, this project is prize worthy in terms of contribution for society, developing civil engineering technology, and attempt for integrated society.


2. Seawall with Artificial Reef of Shimane Nuclear Power Plant.

Shimane Nuclear Power Plant faces to the Japan sea and is attacked by severe waves. A new type of seawall with artificial reef, which has the high stability against wave action and high performance of water proof and requires no breakwater in front, was developed and installed in this power plant. After construction of this seawall, the rear side of that was dried up and completed construction of intake and outlet structures in the waterless environment. Significant cost reduction for construction and shortening work periods were achieved by this breakthrough. This project may become excellent model for development of nuclear power plant in nearshore area.


3. Nagoya Port Next-Generation High Standard Container Terminal - The Second Berth Construction Work at the Tobishima Pier South Side Container Terminal -

The Tobishima Pier South Side Container Terminal in Nagoya port is the first automated terminal in Japan to be developed by the public and the private sectors working closely together. The goal is to realize low-priced and efficient terminal operation.
Remarkable mentions in the technical matter in this terminal are as follows;
・First terminal in Japan to introduce the Jacket Structure as the structure of a quake-resistant high standard 16m deep quay wall
・First terminal in Japan to introduce an automated loading system consisting of Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes(RTG), which are remotely operated, and Automated Guided Vehicles(AGV)


4. Yamate-Tunnel between the 3rd Shibuya and the 4th Shinjuku line -A Construction of the Environmentally Conscious Urban Expressway Tunnel-

The Yamate-Tunnel between Shibuya and Shinjuku is the west part of the Tokyo Metropolitan expressway Central Circular Route, and connects two of the most populous cities in the metropolitan area. The tunnel is built to improve the traffic flow in Tokyo area drastically and expected to yield the environmental benefit.
Through the construction, various kinds of innovative techniques, such as the Shield Tunnel Expansion Methods Without Open-Cut and the U-turn excavation of the TBMs, were developed. And in the planning and the designing of the Ohashi-Junction, adopted was the community participated approach that had been implemented by the integration of the Tokyo metropolitan government, residents of Ohashi and Metropolitan Expressway Co.Ltd.
Those advanced ways developed in this project is widely applicable, and thus, will contribute to the further development in urban area.
