IAC International Symposium on the Internationalization of Japanese Construction Industry Series, No. 3

Farewell Message as the 101st JSCE President

I would like to look back the one year that I have spent as JSCE President.

2014 JSCE Annual Meeting was held at College of Industrial Technology, Nihon University in Chiba. The featured meeting International Panel Discussion was held on the theme on “Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal for Achieving Sustainable Society.” The representatives of 9 Agreement of Cooperation societies (AOC) overseas joined it and shared their views and opinions. Also the 15th International Summer Symposium was offered for international students who were studying in Japan as one of the annual meeting International Session. This symposium was a unique and important meeting in view of developing JSCE’s international network.

In August, I attended the 6th Civil Engineering Conference in the Asian Region (6th CECAR) held in Jakarta, hosted by Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC). JSCE was appointed the ACECC Secretariat along with the election of the ACECC General Secretary during this conference.

Besides, I had several opportunities to meet overseas engineering professional societies such as Indonesia Society of Civil and Structural Engineers (HAKI), Myanmar Engineering Society (MES), Nepal Engineering Association (NEA), Royal Institute of Engineers in the Netherland (KIVI NIRIA), Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE), Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE, UK), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Vietnam Federation of Civil Engineering Association (VFCEA). I met the presidents of those societies and reaffirmed the friendship and cooperation with JSCE.

ASCE holds its annual conference in Panama to celebrate the Panama Canal centennial this year. That celebration coincides with JSCE’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. I wish both ASCE and JSCE successful and wonderful celebrations.

Moreover I would like to mention that the IAC hosts the two interesting symposiums. One is IAC International Symposium on Internationalization of Japanese Construction Industry 3 Series, and the other IAC Japanese Civil Engineers the Global Leaders Symposium Series.

As for natural disaster response, JSCE took a swift action to respond to the disaster caused by Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the central islands of Philippines on November 8, 2013.  JSCE, in cooperation with Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, Inc. (PICE), formed a disaster survey and technical assistance team, and conducted disaster assessments in the affected areas from December 12 to 16.

JSCE marks its centennial in this November. The Society holds a commemorative ceremony, the 3rd Roundtable Meeting on Disaster Management, and International Forum on “Contributions of Infrastructure to Life of Affluence.”

Last, I do thank all JSCE members who give continued support to IAC, and appreciate for further cooperation and advice. I look forward to seeing that JSCE develops its international communication and cooperation.

Thank you very much.

Joint Company Information Session in Civil Engineering for International Students

IAC International Student Network Group held a Joint Company Information Session in Civil Engineering for International Students at the JSCE HQ in Tokyo on May 31. The objective of that Session is to provide international students who are currently studying in Japan with information on Japanese construction companies and job opportunities.  It was the second time for the Group to organize the Session following last year’s one. 12 companies participated this year and 9 out of those companies made presentations on their business activities. The 9 companies also set up their booths at which they placed their brochures and met international student in person. Total 47 students attended the Session mainly from universities in the Kanto region.

Each of the companies delivered a 10-minute presentation on its business, projects, and job opportunities for international students at the beginning of the session. Then, those students, after listening to the presentations, moved to the companies’ booths and learned businesses details, job opportunities and others.

The Session consisted of a short company-presentation time and a long company-student meeting time at booth, that was realized based on the feedback collected from the questionnaire issued at the last year’s Session. This session structure helped the participants listen to the presentations attentively in a limited time-frame and acquire the information what they wanted to spending some time at company booths.

It was a good opportunity for both the companies and students to learn each other. There are many Japanese companies which have had little experience in hiring international students and not fully developed working conditions and requirements like the level of Japanese communication skills to hire international students so far. Accordingly, almost all of the students at the Session had little knowledge of the Japanese companies.

The International Student Network Group, being aware of these facts, plans to hold the Session on a regular basis, once a year possibly, considering a proper time, organization, and others to respond to the feedback from the participants.  The Group strongly will make the Session a major opportunity to liaise between the Japanese companies which look for qualified candidates and the international students who are interested in working in Japan.

Y's  Murmuring

Prof. Lee of JSCE Korea Section and Prof. Ko of Taiwan Section received the JSCE Honorary Membership and the International Collaboration Award respectively at the JSCE Award ceremony held the General Meeting. When I heard that their names were introduced, I was so happy and couldn’t hold myself from applauding them. They are not just distinguished engineers. They are wonderful, fun people to work with, good friends to us and irreplaceable liaison between JSCE and KSCE, and CICHE. Without them, I’m afraid that we IAC had not built good communication with KSCE, and with CICHE. Well, I’m wondering if we are making effort as much as they do, taking actions to respond to their expectations, and moving ourselves forward to see them. What do you think?
