Civil engineering and public relations ─ From unrequited love to compatibility ─
Civil engineers have tended not to actively promote their work to the public. However, the term public relations does not refer to one-sided dissemination of information but rather two-way communication. In other words, civil engineers must aim to move from a one-sided way of thinking to one where they actively involve and communicate with wider society. The root cause of many of the issues faced by the civil engineering industry is that the role and value of civil engineering is not sufficiently communicated outside the industry.
This special feature therefore focuses on public relations outside civil engineering, that is, public relations directed at the general public.
It may surprise readers that this special feature is the fi rst of its kind in the JSCE Magazine to deal directly with public relations. The hope is that this special feature will encourage readers to think about the path forward for public relations in civil engineering.
