NO water and sewerage, NO life
In April 2024, the water supply and sewerage systems administrations will be consolidated in Japan, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's administrative landscape. People heavily depend on water and sewerage infrastructure for their everyday. These vital systems are the foundation of our daily lives. Can you fathom a life without access to clean water? Nonetheless, a confluence of factors, including demographic shifts towards an aging population, heightened awareness of water conservation, and the aging of infrastructure, has engendered a challenging scenario. Furthermore, the current energy limitations also cast a shadow over water and sewerage operations, which require around-the-clock operating facilities. Japan boasts world-class water and sewerage technologies. With one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aiming to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all,” Japan’s international contribution becomes imperative. In this special issue, we introduce various challenges confronting water and sewerage systems and explore the ongoing endeavors to tackle these problems.
