New challenges for civil engineering in uncertain society ─ "Well-dispersed, well-concentrated" society connected by technology─
In this special issue, we will discuss, from several perspectives, the challenges of civil engineering to realize "well-dispersed, well-concentrated society," a concept that aims to create society with a balance between the concentration and dispersion of people and functions, "society that creates spaces that are neither underpopulated nor overcrowded and allows people to live and work regardless of time and place." The 2023 JSCE Annual Meeting will be held under the theme at Hiroshima with the Chugoku section in charge. The Chugoku Chapter extends east to west, with the Chugoku Mountains dividing the Sanyo and San' in regions. In this historical and topographical background, each region needs to be revitalized and developed in order to move from a concentration in metropolitan areas to a decentralization of the regions. In this special issue, we focus on the Chugoku region and consider the revitalization of the region through civil engineering technology to support the uncertain society.
