Panoramic perspective of Japan’s civil engineering community and technology
Is what we want the world to see of us is same as how we are seen? Although Japan struggles with a stagnant economy and a severe gender gap, its transportation and cultural asset are highly recognized. In the January 2023 issue, we featured Japan’s civil engineering community from panoramic perspectives from the world with an interview, two round-table discussions, and five articles by international and domestic authors. Barriers in language and professional qualifications are pointed out by those from abroad and institutions that accept them. However, communication is the crucial key based on the assumption that there is no universal common sense.
Even if we can overcome the language barriers with tools, we must resolve other issues that remain in communication. We shall return to the basics, “Contribute to society with engineering,” and tackle the problems as engineers. It is essential to recognize the issues in the social system and professional qualifications and acknowledge best practices. And then, we are unbound by attributes such as gender and nationality and become fully active. Why do not we look at the world to see reality and take the first step?
