The 31 Issues for Civil Engineers
Our life and work have been significantly affected by several events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, global warming, natural disasters, wars, and crises. No matter where we live, they impact every part of our daily lives, including food, energy, material supply, and lifestyle. In such inter-related age, are we, civil engineers, allowed to be reluctant to face only the problems that civil engineers can solve with engineering tools and methodologies?
This December 2022 edition of JSCE Magazine features “The 31 issues for civil engineers,” we defined “issues” as “topics that we, stakeholders in the industry, must face and discuss” and chose 31 issues in four topic regions from more than a thousand issues with the editors’ collaborative discussion combined with literature surveys. The defined four areas are “Work Style and Business Custom,” “Governance and Maintenance,” “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction,” and “Expectations for New Technologies.” The selected 33 authors with different backgrounds illustrate and discuss each issue with prediction. They also recommend books for thinking about the future. The editorial team wishes this feature would be a source for thinking about your future contribution to the world.
