Frontiers of Marine Civil Engineering

This special feature focuses on the innovative efforts of port and harbor works and marine civil engineering in Japan. We will first consider port development in Japan by looking back on the achievements of HIROI Isami, the father of port engineering in Japan, by exploring carbon-neutral ports—a concept seeing progress in recent years—that look to decarbonize industrial centers around ports, and by covering the development of hydrogen, ammonia, and other next-generation energy supply bases through comparisons with examples found abroad. Next, this special feature will offer an outlook on renewable offshore wind power, which is currently being commercialized in Japan, as well as provide information on the latest developments in this sector. In addition, we will explore blue carbon—marine ecosystems that sequester and store CO2—as well as efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from work vessels and the production of wave-dissipating blocks. Finally, looking at recent sea-related topics, we will showcase how Japan is handling submarine volcanic eruptions, as well as convey the appeal of marine civil engineering according to interviews with students majoring in civil engineering.
