Beyond Civilized Society: The New Aims of Civil Engineering Based on Historical Perspective

The 2022 National Convention, whose theme is Beyond Civilized Society: The New Aims of Civil Engineering Based on Historical Perspective, will be held in the city of Kyoto. In order to think about the direction of civil engineering from a perspective other than development, the convention will focus on the early Showa period beginning in 1926, rather than the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868–1926) when Japan experienced rapid modernization.

The first national convention was held in April 1937 at the then Kyoto Imperial University. Site visits as part of this convention included many civil engineering projects involving reconstruction and expansion that were implemented due to new challenges resulting from a society that had rigorously pushed development beginning in 1868. Comparing the current state of these sites in 2022 with the viewpoints at the time of their construction will be helpful in thinking about civil engineering beyond the rapid development seen in Japan.

This special feature will explore how civil engineering contributed to a modernized Japan and offer a glimpse into the direction it might take going forward.
