For better or for worse, that separation from the rest of the world means unique ecosystems, cultures, and lifestyles have developed here over time, resulting in the nation we see today. Just as the value of the increasingly visible term diversity has gained recognition in recent years, aspects unique to each island should be considered its important assets, offering their own value and appeal. This special feature is contributed to by experts and practitioners active in a wide range of fields. Their perceptive knowledge and expertise in various areas is invaluable for civil engineering and a great resource for realizing a better society. Given today’s rapidly changing world, this feature aims to create opportunities for readers to think about our islands once more—to consider their appeals and explore what can be done to sustain their local communities.
