2019 Environmental Awards

[Group-1]

1. Development of "Water Surface Control Device" which is a sewer technology to contribute to water environment improvement and global technology expansion

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Sewerage
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Sewerage Service Corporation
  • Nippon Koei Co.,Ltd.

"Water Surface Control Device" was developed to reduce pollutants flowing into public waters, which is a main problem of a combined sewerage system. By installing the device in an existing CSO chamber, more than 70% of floatables to be discharged into river and sea can be removed. "Water Surface Control Device" has been widely adopted in more than 1,700 locations in Japan and more than 30 locations overseas. Because "Water Surface Control Device" can be easily applied to various sorts of CSO chambers and does not require any fossil fuel energy, it can contribute to environmental conservation.

2. Development of Low Carbon Concrete "ECM (Energy・CO2 Minimum) Concrete" with Low CO2 Emission and High Durability

  • Tokyo Institute of Technology
  • Kajima Corp.
  • Takenaka Corp.
  • Nippon Steel Blast Furnace Slag Cement Co., Ltd.
  • DC Co., Ltd.
  • Taiheiyo Cement Corp.
  • Nippon Steel Cement Co., Ltd.
  • Takemoto Oil & Fat Co., Ltd.

ECM concrete uses large amount of blast furnace slag, it is an innovative technology that reduces CO2 emissions by 65% compared to normal concrete. It is expected to be widely used as an eco-friendly concrete. Concrete using large amount of blast furnace slag has bad influence in slump loss and strength is low at early age. On the other hand, ECM concrete solve these problems by development of dispersant and optimal cement composition. Applied ECM concrete to the structures has been confirmed that there is no problem on quality and safety.

3. Development of low-cost high-performance thermal well and heat pump system for aquifer thermal energy storage systems

  • The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems Ltd.
  • Morikawa Well Boring Industries Ltd.
  • Osaka City University
  • Osaka City

Development of a commercial-based aquifer thermal storage system in a seaside urban area.

[Group-2]

1. Transforming our world by reducing garbage.-Nationwide expansion and standardization of Eco-friendly Blast Technology.

  • Yamada Infra Technos Co., Ltd
  • Japan Steel Structure Circulation Blast Association
  • Eco-Clean Circulating Blast Research Center
  • Yamada Kentaro (Nagoya University)
  • Kinoshita Koji (Gifu University)

This project aims to promote the reduction of industrial waste and the improvement of the working environment by developing and commercializing a “Eco-Clean Circulating Blast Method” using reusable metal-based abrasive. This has also contributed to a significant reduction in greenhouse gases generated during the transport and disposal of industrial waste. We will continue to work on reducing the environmental impact under the spirit of “Transforming the world by reducing garbage” in the future.

2. Hydrogen Supply Chain System from Cattle Manure ~Development of a sustainable community in an agricultural region , Hokkaido~

  • AIR WATER INC.
  • KAJIMA Corp.
  • NIPPON STEEL PIPELINE & ENGINEERING CO., LTD.
  • Air Products Japan K.K.

This project is intended for hydrogen energy supply chain to process hydrogen from cattle manure originated biogas and to feed hydrogen to fuel cells and fuel cell vehicles, in Tokachi, a dairy farming region. The project demonstrated the merits of the supply of hydrogen for the energy demands in the area by high efficiency energy utilization and as an emergency back-up of the energy against the disasters such as earthquakes. The hydrogen production process using dairy farm excrement also contributes to reduction of CO2 emission and the pollution of the environment by the cattle manure.
