Understanding the Spirits of Creating Modern Japan : Meiji 150 th

This year marks 150 years since the modernization of Japan began in 1868, the year of the Meiji Restoration (the first year of the Meiji period). The dramatic modernization of Japan during the Meiji period was the result of the industrial development policies pushed by the Ministry of Industry and other government agencies. The field of engineering played a significant role in this modernization; the social infrastructure created through civil engineering in particular became the foundation for the development of the nation. This special feature looks back on these 150 years, focusing on national planning and social infrastructure investments,   reviewed against the backdrop of the state of affairs at the end of the Edo period and the early Meji period, both in Japan and abroad. Through this historical review, we aim to gain insight on and draw implications regarding the future. This feature does not focus on specific facilities or well-known figures. Rather, it consists of articles with a broader perspective, focusing on organizations like the Ministry of Industry and projects on the national scale. The articles look at the historical circumstances behind their establishment, the ideas behind them, the spirit driving the people who committed themselves to these organizations and projects.
