New capabilities of materials in civil engineering

Recently, various points of view are required for the development of materials in civil engineering in response to diverse necessities. In this month’s feature, it was intended to seek the future possibilities and direction of the development of materials in civil engineering by a multidisciplinary approach. First, in order to understand the background, adoption process and so forth in the past development of new materials, round-table discussions are carried out in each research field of steel structures and concrete. Next, examples of relatively new material developments, which have already been put into or very close to practical use, are introduced. Finally, as a conclusion of this special feature, future prospects for materials in civil engineering are suggested. We hope that it will serve as an opportunity to re-recognize the possibilities of materials and create new ideas throughout this special feature.
