Feature article : Renewable Power -For sustainable development-

The Paris Agreement adopted at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) went into effect in November 2016. Japan announced its commitment to the international community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26% (compared to 2013 levels) by 2030. In addition, Japan indicated a long-term goal of an 80% reduction by 2050 in the "Plan for Global Warming Countermeasures" approved by the Japanese Cabinet in May 2016. To reach these goals, it is necessary to steadily develop low-carbon energy sources, including renewable energy, in the electric power sector, which accounts for approximately 35% of total greenhouse gas emissions. In this special feature, we introduce governmental and business efforts to develop renewable energy sources in a balanced manner while reducing development costs. These efforts are in motion in the deregulated electric power sector in order to provide energy-the cornerstone of modern life and industry-in a safe, stable, and cheap manner while aiming to make energy low carbon.
