Feature Articles : Towards Olympics and Paralympics ─Thinking about the future of Tokyo─

Tokyo was selected as the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics host city. For the success of these world’s largest events, various planning activities and preparations are going on in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Compared to the situation of Tokyo in 1964 when Tokyo hosted the Olympics last time, current international positions and issues of Tokyo are very different. In addition, the features of mega events and cities have also changed with time. Hosting the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics would be a great opportunity to boost the further evolution and development of Tokyo and entire Japan. Hence, what can we civil engineers contribute?

It is our intention that this special issue will provide an occasion to think about the future of Tokyo taking the opportunity of hosting the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
