The allure of civil engineering in underground space

In modern civil engineering in Japan, the active utilization of underground space has been promoted to utilize limited surface land effectively.

However, approximately 100 years after the opening of subways and about 80 years since the formation of underground streets,
the maintenance and renewal of aging underground structures have become an urgent issue.

This special issue reviews the construction and engineering technologies for underground spaces and structures to date, introduces the
latest advancements in the development and maintenance of underground spaces, and explores the future direction of underground
space utilization by highlighting its appeal and new challenges.
