Railways and the land of Japan in a new era
This special feature focuses on the contribution of the railway network improvement to the development of land in Japan. Since the birth of railway in Japan in 1872, the improvement of the railway network has played a signifi cantly important role in the growth of Japan’s industry and economy.
This special article discusses the effect of transportation system on the national spatial development strategies in Japan.
First, the ideal shape of future transportation is described and introduced, where, the benefi cial effect that the Chuo Shinkansen stations will newly bring on the land development and the distribution system is taken up as one topic.
Next, we look at the local transportation network, which has various issues to solve owing
to the population decline and other concerns. We have to consider the stimulating strategies to revitalize the local regions.
Finally, a new technological innovation is introduced that helps to realize the sustainable maintenance and development of national land and transportation.
We hope that this article will contribute to the active discussions on development of the land of transportation in Japan in the future.
