A Modern Look at Ancient Civil Engineering

The Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group in Osaka Prefecture was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2019. How did ancient people build these burial mounds whose geometric design makes them examples of extraordinary technical achievement?
When considering the history of civil engineering, we tend to focus on the early modern period to the present. However, civil engineering has existed since ancient times, and it remains an essential element of human society. This special feature focuses on ancient civil engineering techniques, describing how ancient structures were constructed and introducing examples of conservation efforts today. Throughout history, people have learned through experience. We aim to provide readers with an opportunity to reconsider modern civil engineering and think on what forms civil engineering may take in the future.
