Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020: Toward the Future of Japan
In September 2013, Tokyo was selected to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A wide range of preparations have been made in the seven years since this decision, including the development of stadiums and other required infrastructure. The Games have now been delayed until 2021 due to COVID-19, but their overall mission remains unchanged, and they will additionally act as proof that humanity has overcome the pandemic. Not simply an international sporting event, the Olympic and Paralympic Games also have the power to transform society. This special feature therefore takes a look back at the changes in society brought by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, as well as provides an opportunity to consider in what ways the Games, taking place next year in a fundamentally different social environment, will impact the future.
