Exploring Civil Engineering To Be in Society

Three Special Committees for President Mr. Ohishi have been exploring the ideal of civil engineering from three different perspectives for the past year. Through the discussion, we set the ideal of civil engineering as "public science for well-being and vibrant society”, “Science, technology and philosophy supporting social capital policy”, “Sustainable living of human beings” and “Formation of foundation for sustainable development of socioeconomic activities”. In order to attain the ideal of civil engineering, we have to keep exploring “what is civil engineering” and “what should be civil engineering in our society” corresponding to the natural, political, financial and global situation, and keep pursuing it based on what we have explored.
In this special feature, as a part of further exploring, experts in various fields discussed civil engineering from a wide range of perspectives such as economics, industry, society, natural disasters, history and new technology. This special feature could act as a catalyst to explore civil engineering to be in society.
