Real Wealth in regions for future prosperity - New concept by using the Inclusive Wealth Index -
“The Inclusive Wealth Index (IWI)” was presented at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (the well-known “Rio+20”conference). The IWI is a new way of measuring progress for the sustainability of countries. This is an attempt to measure true wealth by the stock instead of the GDP. The IWI can be a key to the sustainable development of the regional economy by aiming for the development that exploits the characteristics of each region.
In this special topic, after explaining the similarities and differences between the cost benefit analysis handled in civil engineering planning and the IWI, case examples of regional revitalization mainly in the Kyushu region is introduced. The editors of this special topic hope that this will become an opportunity to think about future ways of social capital development while comparing these cases with the IWI.
