Feature Articles : Thinking of the possibility of utilizing UAV in Civil Engineering

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) often referred to as a drone has attracted much attention in recent years. Inexpensive, easy to maneuver, and the ability to take photos and videos from the sky, are the reasons that the UAV has attracted much attention.
Increasing attempts have been made to use the UAV in the field of civil engineering in the last four to five years. For example, the UAV has been tried to be used for taking photos of the status of construction progress and completion, measuring the amount of soil that was excavated during the construction, and inspecting civil engineering facilities. However, as these attempts have just started, further investigations are necessary before full-scale utilization. Therefore, this special issue presents articles about interviews with the experts, overseas case examples, and the efforts made by Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), as well as the achievements made by those who have already utilized the UAV.
