Feature Articles : Now of river management -It captures the change, to protect-

Rivers and river infrastructure mainly consist of river channels formed by natural forces, embankments that are built by repeated earth fill over the years, seawalls that protect embankments and river banks, and other constructions that are built for water utilization.

Since maintenance and management of rivers need to be done in accordance with different characteristics in each long stretch of river and location, and floods, which are special phenomena, experience-based management has been carried out by accumulating the knowledge of shape change and river disasters in the past under various conditions, and the knowledge of restoration and maintenance.

At the present time, disasters are getting more severe due to global warming and local heavy rain, and there is a concern regarding dilapidated facilities.  Focusing on maintenance and management that ensures that rivers function properly, this special issue introduces current maintenance and management activities, and the current situation on site, and technology development.
