Feature Articles : Structural engineering for future social needs

Japan’s seismic design technology has reached a high level due to the numerous earthquakes that have occurred in Japan. However, issues caused by other disasters that have not yet received much attention have emerged. Along with the changing social structure including aging society, importance has also been placed on maintenance and preparation for disasters other than earthquakes, such as fire.

Expectations for Civil Engineering have also gone beyond the creation of richness through the development of safe infrastructure for economic activities, and expanded to the creation of mental richness through urban and community development. New movements have started to develop the system of Structural Engineering from a structural design oriented system, to a system that includes the interaction of weather effects and surrounding facilities, and to explore ways to integrate with fields such as social science.

This special issue presents reviews of the issues in Structural Engineering and an analysis of the front-line trends, aiming to seek directions for the future.
