Civil engineering and art

It may be surprising to see a feature on art in this magazine. Civil engineering supports daily life as an unsung hero, rarely taking center stage. Art is an active expression of individuality and creativity.
Despite their differences, civil engineering and art share similarities. The term "art" comes from the Latin word "ars," meaning skill or craft, and encompasses both art and technology. Over time, these fi elds have specialized, but they were once closely related.
Civil engineering can be defined as the essential infrastructure that supports our daily lives. Its importance becomes apparent during disasters or when infrastructure fails. Similarly, art enriches our daily lives, and losing access to paintings, music, or literature would be devastating for many.
Art involves the creation of aesthetic value through materials, techniques, and human effort. Civil engineering could use similar skills and materials to create customized solutions that adapt to natural conditions.
This feature explores the connections between civil engineering and art from a variety of perspectives, including experts in both fields. This exploration aims to inspire new insights and perspectives on civil engineering
