Heritage Tourism

One paradigm shift caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is the change in the value of movement. There are increased expectations now for exterior spaces and semi-open spaces due to the need for social distancing to avoid the three Cs—closed spaces, crowded places, and close-contact settings—and restrictions on movement. At the same time, the need for movement itself is in doubt as communication in online and virtual spaces has increased and the value of sharing time with coworkers in physical spaces has come into question.

Heritage sites in the fields of landscaping and civil engineering—real estate—have value that can only be experienced by visiting the physical site. These form the foundation of the environment, economy, and culture of the given area or region, and learning from these is important to enable sustainable environmental management.

Together with the Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, this special feature utilizes the perspectives of experts and engineers in the fields of civil engineering, landscaping, architecture, and urban planning to explore a number of sites, consider the value that should be preserved, and discuss the importance of creating legacies for the future. The aim is to provide readers with an opportunity to reconsider the value that can be gained by visiting heritage sites in person.
