Feature article : Digitalization of Civil Engineering

Recently, the momentum of the Internet of Things (IoT) has been tremendous. The IoT is the concept of measuring people, things and other objects with sensors or by other means, converting measured results into data, analyzing this in real time, giving feedback, and providing new information and services. The IoT is garnering attention from many industries, both domestically and internationally, while very similar mechanisms have already been introduced in many projects in civil engineering. In this special feature, we will explain what the IoT is while also introducing examples of implemented case studies and related research in civil engineering. In addition to monitoring and other conventional uses, there are also noteworthy applications in healthy city planning, safety management at construction sites, and technology succession. Of particular note is the interview with the creator of the concept behind the IoT, Professor Ken Sakamura (Dean of INIAD Department and the Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, Toyo University). The interview provides insight into the essence and future evolution of the IoT, as well as expectations for its application in civil engineering, approaches to coordination with information fields and more.
