Feature Articles : Expanding function of “KEIKAN” design in civil engineering as architecture for infrastructure and environment

In recent years, there is an increasing social demand for the proper design of structures and public spaces of infrastructure that takes into consideration economic and social activities, history, culture, and customs of the region. In fields such as management for regional vitalization, regional conservation including cultural heritage, and reconstruction from disaster with large scale alteration in space, principles such as “to define the policies of the plan and design based on the evaluation of local conditions”, and “to proper control the concrete shape and space in a holistic way with consideration of human space and natural environment”, are required. By presenting articles on several case examples that incorporate these principles, this special issue aims to give an overview of the latest situation of the concept of “KEIKAN” design as architecture for infrastructure and environment.
