Report of the 9st International Summer Symposium

Date: Tuesday, 18 September 2007
Venue: Yokohama National University

The Ninth International Summer Symposium organized by the International Activities Committee of JSCE (Chair: Prof. Osamu Kusakabe, Tokyo Institute of Technology) was held at Yokohama National University, Yokohama, on September 18, 2007. The symposium is held annually so as to provide an opportunity to exchange information and ideas concerned with various aspects of civil engineering among international students and engineers, including Japanese. The objective of the symposium is also to promote international exchange and mutual understanding between international communities and Japanese students and engineers.

The symposium started in 1999 and has had a high reputation as a valuable opportunity for exchanges among students and engineers in English. The Ninth Summer Symposium was supported by the International Scientific Exchange Fund, JSCE.

The number of attendants of the symposium was 103 (international students/engineers: 72; Japanese students/engineers: 31). This year's keynote lectures were given by Dr. Yoshimi Goda, Professor Emeritus, Yokohama National University, titled "Call for Engineering Judgment in Coastal Engineering Research" and Prof. Osamu Kusakabe, titled "Towards sustainable civil engineering". These lectures served as a reference very much for the international students and helps them have a vision for a future.

Moreover, there were a total of 82 technical presentations from 7 areas in civil engineering (i.e., A. Structural Mechanics and Earthquake Engineering: 20; B. Hydraulic, Coastal and Environmental Engineering: 16; C. Geotechnical Engineering: 18; D. Infrastructure Planning and Management: 5; E. Materials, Concrete Structures and Pavements: 10; F. Construction Management and Engineering: 2; G. Environmental Systems and Engineering: 11). The symposium was brought to a close with the Reception where there were lively exchanges between the participants. The "Certificate of Excellence" was awarded, before this reception, to 14 speakers for their outstanding papers and presentations.

The award winners are: Ahmed Kamal (Nagoya Univ.)/ Rabin Tuladhar (Saitama Univ.)/ Pang-jo Chun (Wayne State Univ.)/ Sohail Ahmed (Saitama Univ.)/ Napayalage Aruna Kithsiri Nandasena (Saitama Univ.)/ Gyeong-Seon Yeom (Nagoya Univ.)/ Ruta Ireng Wicaksono (Univ. of Tokyo)/ Olivhal Paghangaan Borda (Univ. of Tokyo)/ Deepagoda Thuduwe Kankanamge Kelum Chamindu (Saitama Univ.)/ Manalo Allan Capilar (Saitama Univ.)/ Marish S. Madlangbayan (Tokyo Institute of Technology)/ Matiko Samson (Yokohama National Univ.)/ Sasikala Shanmugasuntharam(Saitama Univ.)/ Kasige Anusha Priyanthi (Saitama Univ.)

This symposium closed with a promise to meet again in the Tenth International Summer Symposium to be held next year.
