HOKKAIDO Innovation in Future Development
― Roles of Civil engineering technologies of Hokkaido

The 2018 Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers was held in Hokkaido, during the milestone 150th anniversary of its naming. The theme of this meeting is “Innovation in Social Systems -- Roles of Civil Engineering in Future Development.” Under this special theme, innovation developed in Hokkaido and the roles of civil engineering technologies in the realization of such innovation will be introduced.

The fundamental intent behind our efforts in the development of Hokkaido is to contribute to the progress of Japan. We promote dynamic development in our region by solving the national problems of our times, pioneering the implementation of the solutions, and ultimately contributing to the nation. The 8th Term Hokkaido Comprehensive Development Plan was formulated with three promotional objectives: to form a regional society in which individuals can thrive, to promote industries with global perspectives, and to develop resilient and sustainable land. Ever since the Meiji Restoration, civil engineering technologies and information utilizing the characteristics of the distinctive natural and social environments of Hokkaido have played major roles, and much has been expected of them.
