Contribution from concrete to the future - Toward realizing further reduction of environmental burden -

The use of by-products and industrial waste in concrete materials is actively being promoted, triggered by the promulgation of the “Act on Promoting Green Procurement.” However, while a fair amount of by-products and industrial waste - which include cement and other raw materials - are often used in public works construction, attention is not focused on these materials, and their benefits to society are often not recognized. This special feature introduced initiatives to promote the use of by-products and industrial waste in concrete led by the national government, municipalities, and the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, efforts of the industries supplying materials (cement, electric power, steel, and construction), and development case examples. Also, utilization in areas near the point of occurrence is critical for the promotion of use. Therefore, examples of utilization in the Hokuriku, Chugoku and Shikoku regions are introduced as examples that give consideration to regional characteristics. We aim to convey through this special feature the understanding that concrete contributes to reducing environmental impacts.
