1. OSMAN GAZI BRIDGE

  • IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd.

Osman Gazi Bridge is the world’s fourth longest suspension bridge with a central span length of 1550m, which is a highway BOT project with a total length of 420 km connecting Istanbul and Izmir in the Republic of Turkey.
The bridge adopts a seismic isolation technology that allows the caisson foundation of the main tower to slide on the seabed during large-scale earthquakes. At the same time, durability and monitoring technology were considered to contribute to the future development of the bridge technology and deserves the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka award.

2. The Mukogawa Bridge

  • West Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd.  Kansai Regional Head Office
  • Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd.
  • Chiyoda Engineering Consultants Co., Ltd.

The Mukogawa Bridge, a 442m long PRC 5 span continuous extradosed rigid frame bridge with butterfly-shaped concrete panel webs, is located between Takatsuki JCT and Kobe JCT of the New Meishin Expressway.
After more than 40 years of service, the deteriorating conditions of the Meishin Expressway and many other expressways have become apparent. In an effort to improve the durability of the expressway, the Mukogawa Bridge was planned and designed as more durable and more maintainable bridge. The bridge is wide enough to carry multiple traffic lanes in both directions and supported by high piers ranging from 50m to 80m to span over 100m. It was constructed by the precast segmental erection method, so as to make a step forward in putting i-Construction into practice and improve the productivity by labor-saving.
This long span bridge with high-durability and high-maintainability was constructed using the best of bridge technology, and it can contribute significantly to the development of bridge technology, and deserves the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka award.

3. The Asakegawa Bridge

  • Central Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd.
  • IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd.・KAWATA ENGINEERING CORPORATION・KAWADA CONSTRUCTION CO., LTD. - JV
  • Eight-Japan Engneering Consultants Inc.
  • DAI NIPPON CONSTRUCTION

The Asakegawa Bridge is a 3-span Steel-prestressed concrete composite continuous box girder stiffened with arch ribs, length of 325m long, in the Shin-Meishin Expressway, located in yokkaichi city. The type of bridge was determined by its crossing conditions and the balance of spans. Steel Slab with large U ribs is adapted to enhance the fatigue durability. To reduce construction costs, the new box girder bridge nearby the Asakegawa bridge was used as the launching nose.
This bridge with durability and seismic adequacy was constructed using the best of bridge technology, and it can contribute significantly to the development of bridge technology, and deserves the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka award.

4. METROPOLITAN EXPRESSWAY ROUTE 1 HANEDA LINE KATSUSHIMA DISTRICT VIADUCT

  • Metropolitan Expressway Co., Ltd.
  • Oriental Consultants Co., Ltd.
  • PS Mitsubishi Co., Ltd.

The Metropolitan Expressway Route 1 Katsushima District Viaduct is a prestressed concrete continuous box-girder bridge with Gerber hinge. It has been more than 50 years since its opening and some deteriorations, such as cracks in Gerber hinges, corrosion on bearings, have been observed by regular inspection.
To extend the life span of Gerber beams and upgrade the performance of bridge, the Gerber beams were continuously integrated with an external cable system and existing bearings were relocated.
Since the durability, seismic performance, and maintainability have been upgraded, it is considered to contribute to the future development of the bridge technology and deserves the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka award.

5. The seismic retrofitting of the Katashinagawa Bridge

  • East Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd. Kanto Regional Head Office
  • HITACHI ZOSEN CORPORATION
  • ORIENTAL CONSULTANTS Co., Ltd.
  •  RAITO KOGYO Co., Ltd.

The Katashinagawa Bridge is a 1034m three-lane 3-span continuous truss bridge, in operation since 1985 along the Kanetsu Expressway between the Akagi Interchange and the Numata Interchange. The Seismic retrofitting of the bridge was basically undertaken by replacing existing bearings with seismic isolation bearings in order to minimize the reinforcement of superstructure. In case the existing bearings was hard to replace, the friction dampers easy in maintenance were adapted.
This large-scale truss bridge was reasonably reinforced using the best of the earthquake resistance technology, and it can contribute significantly to the development of bridge technology, and deserves the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka award.
