Feature article : Age of Adaptation to Climate Change

In line with the commitment to hold the increase in the global average temperature below 2°C above pre-industrial revolution levels, the promotion of “adaptation measures” in signatory nations was stipulated in the Paris Agreement concluded at COP21 on December 12, 2015. These measures aim at enhancing resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change. In Japan, too, adaptation activities are going full-scale, as the “National Plan for Adaptation to the Impacts of Climate Change” gained Cabinet approval in November 2015, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism formulated its own “Climate Change Adaptation Plan.” This special feature aims to build up a common understanding on the adaptation measures within JSCE through sharing the latest knowledge and policy initiatives in the related field and introducing specific domestic and overseas projects that are already partially in motion. Furthermore, we will explore issues and possibilities in the field of civil engineering to promote future adaptation activities.
