The Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) 2015 Annual Meeting, with the theme “Civil Engineering to Create a Future Positive with Community: we are going to take a new step forward”, will be held at Tsushima campus, Okayama University, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. This is the first time that Okayama Prefecture will host the JSCE annual meeting. The keywords in the theme, “with Community” emphasizes cooperation with the local community, “to Create a Future Positive” expresses a sense of responsibility to adequately tackle various issues such as infrastructure aging, and “a New Step Forward” indicates that this year is the 101th year since the establishments of JSCE. It is our intention that this special issue will be an opportunity to reflect on these keywords with a focus on Okayama Prefecture.

Specifically, this special issue takes up topics such as civil engineering heritage in Okayama Prefecture, development of railways, highways, and ports, energy related projects, and characteristic initiatives of southern and northern parts of Okayama Prefecture.
