China Sichuan Earthquake, 2008

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Sichuan province in the south China on May 12, 2008. According to the official New China News Agency, the death toll from the earthquake rose to almost 15,000 and will likely go up. An estimated 40,000 more trapped under rubble or missing. 2,000 or more of the dead were students and teachers caught in schools that collapsed.

On behalf of JSCE members, Dr. Yumio Ishii, President sent a condolence letter to the JSCE's counterpart China Civil Engineering Society on the 14th. In the letter, he expressed that the JSCE would offer cooperation and assistance for relief and reconstruction efforts in response to a request at any time and wished the afflicted people a quick and smooth recovery.
